When your nose runs, itches, and reacts to dust or pollen, I first separate symptom relief from pattern discussion. In Chinese medicine, a lung qi deficiency with cold may be considered when symptoms recur with chills, clear discharge, and fatigue. Allergic rhinitis still needs ordinary allergy care. Moxibustion is a complementary option, not a replacement for an inhaler, antihistamine, nasal steroid, or emergency treatment.

What does a cold-deficiency pattern mean in this context?

A traditional cold-deficiency pattern may include clear nasal discharge, sneezing, sensitivity to wind, and low energy. Those features overlap with common allergic rhinitis. Pattern language cannot identify an allergy trigger or rule out infection. I use it only to choose a gentle warming approach after the medical problem is understood.

Which points can support a gentle warming routine?

I keep the first session short. I use ST36 and CV4 for a general warming plan, then ask a trained practitioner about GV14 and BL13. Do not place burning moxa directly on the face. Smoke can irritate the nose and lungs. Electric heating devices still need skin checks.

AcupointLocationTimeAction/Notes
ST36 (Zusanli)Below the knee, lateral to the tibia10–15 minUse mild heat; stop if itching or redness increases.
CV4 (Guanyuan)Lower midline abdomen8–10 minKeep the heat comfortable; avoid broken or inflamed skin.
GV14 (Dazhui)Midline below the seventh cervical vertebra5–10 minHave a practitioner confirm the point and protect the neck skin.
BL13 (Feishu)Upper back, beside the third thoracic vertebra5–10 minUse a trained practitioner; do not self-treat a hard-to-see area.

How can you combine moxa with ordinary allergy care?

Keep the room smoke-free when possible. Wash bedding as your allergy plan requires. Reduce known triggers. Follow your clinician's medication instructions. Record sneezing, blockage, itching, sleep, and medication use for two weeks. This diary tells you more than a single good day.

In a 40-person pilot trial, electric heating moxibustion and acupuncture both improved nasal symptom and quality-of-life scores. The groups were not significantly different, so the study does not show that moxa is superior. No treatment-related adverse events were reported in the electric-heating group. When does nasal trouble need medical attention?

Seek care for one-sided blockage, repeated nosebleeds, facial swelling, high fever, severe facial pain, breathing trouble, or symptoms that do not fit your usual pattern. Stop moxa if smoke worsens wheezing or nasal irritation. Ask before treatment during pregnancy, with asthma, reduced sensation, diabetes, skin disease, or a history of burns. Use the AAAAI allergic-rhinitis guide for standard care questions.

What should you expect from the research?

Research is still small and uses different devices, point sets, and controls. Some trials combine moxa with herbs or other treatment. That makes the result hard to apply to a home routine. Treat moxibustion as an optional adjunct, and keep proven allergy care central.
