As a novice, I have been keeping Chinese betta fish, and they have been with me for an extended period. In October, I was checking the pH of my fish tank water.

The Suitable pH value of Chinese Betta Fish

The Chinese betta fish is suited to living in water with a pH value of 6.5 – 7.2. However, the pH value of my aquarium was 8.28, which is significantly alkaline. This imbalance may have the following effects on the Betta fish:

  • Damage to the respiratory system: Highly alkaline water can affect the gill function of the Betta fish, leading to breathing difficulties.
  • Decreased immunity: Prolonged exposure to alkaline water may reduce the Betta fish's immune system, making it more susceptible to illness.
  • Slow growth: Alkaline water is not conducive to the normal growth of Betta fish.

Methods of pH Adjustment for Chinese Betta Fish

  • Using chemical adjusters: You can use specialized acidic adjusters to lower the pH value. However, be mindful not to adjust by more than 0.2 at a time to avoid causing excessive stress to the betta fish.
  • Adding driftwood or peat: Driftwood and peat can release acidic substances, gradually reducing the pH value of the water. Placing driftwood in the aquarium or putting peat in the filter bag of the filter can both play a role in adjustment.
  • Mixing in soft water: You can mix the aquarium water with soft water (such as distilled water or purified water) to reduce the water hardness, thereby lowering the pH value.
  • Using carbon dioxide: In an aquarium with aquatic plants, appropriately increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide can also help to lower the pH value.
  • Regular water changes: Regularly replacing a portion of the aquarium water can help to replace some of the water with a higher pH value.

When adjusting the pH value, it is crucial to do it slowly to prevent drastic changes in pH value over a short period, which can harm the Betta fish.
